Default Greens Weapons and GW2

If you have been around Guild Wars long enough, you will know that there are lots of green named weapons that drop from different enemies. You may even have been around long enough to know that originally, there were no such thing as green weapons at all.

A little GW history for those newcomers: Back in summer of '05 the player base of guild wars was promised a new explorable area called Sorrow's Furnace to tide us over until Factions was released. With that update came green weapons that were uniquely named after contest entries for boss monsters.

Before green weapons it was extremely hard to get perfect weapons for PvE and you had to be very rich to afford mods. I still remember selling two perfect Vampiric bow strings for 100 platinum each. When green weapons were introduced it was easy to obtain and farm elite weapons. (4 man Orozar anyone?)

For GW2 I would think that there should be no green weapons, especially if the new inscription system is implemented. If people still need perfect weapons, a collector should fit the bill. Bosses should drop other types of rewards instead (minipet!?).

Anet obviously had no plans of an auction house, even though we screamed for one, so green weapons were a an bridge between hardcore and casual gamers in terms of equipment. What do you guys think?

I agree. It's honestly too easy for everyone to get perfect or near perfect weapons. I do remember when the vamp strings were like, the greatest drop ever. Now they go to the merchant. I can't even remember the last time I tried selling everything. Greens can't completely be blamed for this, but that is probably around when the problems started.

The longer Guild Wars is around, the cheaper things get. Greens were a good idea (and if you were around from way back, you may remember when we didn't have the advantage of all the traders we have now, wouldn't mind being able to get more than 100g for a rune again), and it was great to be able to get cheap perfect items. However it is so easy to get perfect weapons without having to buy/farm a green (maybe not gold perfect, but mods are cheap so collector items are cheap and perfect).

It is easy now to get perfect items, but since GW2 will be a whole new game (maybe we can "inherit" items, however not for sure) it wont be as easy to find cheap perfect weapons without having Uniques.

Green weapons should stay, they are important for casual players who want a perfect weapon without the need of absurd amounts of gold. If you disdain green weapons, don't use them. They won't do any harm to your extravagant virtual lifestyle.

I don't think they should drop minis. That's just too many minis.

No, sorry, I can't agree with dropping greens. But, that needs some examples from the mind of VGJ. Bear with me.

Let's say that A.Net decides that for GW2 they will keep the idea for the weapons system in general (max damage weapons are plentiful, mods are basically set). Let's say they even sweeten the pot by including Inscription and mod vendors with prices dictated by player supply and demand much like the rune vendors now, and they keep collector weapons (which would all be pretty sweet). The problem here is that that won't make a lot of mods any easier to get for Johny Q. Casualplayer since he can't get his hands on the gobs of gold needed to get say a +29 HP mod, let alone a perfect one. Oh but wait! He's still got an option in Green items, and let's say there's one that's just right for him. He could go out and *gasp* play the game to get it himself, or maybe just pay someone else that spent some time getting an extra one (or farmed 20 extra ones). Chances are that much like right now that fully assembled weapon will cost considerably less than the singular mod will, let alone enough to craft that weapon. So he can't change what the mods are on the new weapon, that doesn't matter. It has what Johny needs it for, or it's at least pretty close. Does Johny not deserve the weapon because he doesn't play the game religiously? Or should he "Join a guild" and have them give him one? (Which is a complete misnomer, very very few PvE guilds just give stuff away for no reason) This option allows casual players to remain competitive without having to grind their lives away for a few measly golds or forcing them to wait for a lucky drop. Allowing the casual to be competitive is one of the founding tenants of Guild Wars in general, and it's one of the reasons the game remains balanced.

I don't know how things are going to be in GW2, but I'd hope that we can see more things like Green weapons.

I think they should redo the whole item system for GW2, which is pretty limiting and uninteresting here in GW1. We know that the PvE of GW2 will be about high levels maybe even without a cap, so the strict item balance may be turned into something that also allows more character progression in the gear way. More variety = better system, and it doesn't mean endless grind if done well.

No idea if there will be place for greens (fixed stats unique items), but if yes, i hope they won't be easy to obtain, "unique" items shouldn't really be easily farmable solo in huge quantities from a boss wandering around the corner in a freely explorable zone just outside an outpost.

I'd hate to see green weapons in Guild Wars 2 cause they kill the game. I remember the time when the perfect drop was so expensive that most of people just couldn't aford to buy it! And for me it was kind of nice to have something rare that almost no one has... I miss that time much

But i must admit that i have 13 green bows for my ranger!

does that make sense ? you only need a blue, purple or gold max dmg weapon and you can make it perfect by adding inscriptions, greens are max dmg too

but what they dont have is max upgrades, which is way most people end up using greens instead since its less hassle and less costly (generally) to buy a max upgraded green than it is to upgrade a collectors weapon which also only come in very limited skins.

To begin with i only used (Tryia) Collectors weapons on all my characters until about halfway between factions and Nightfall and then i ended up getting greens since they had nicer skins stats (due to upgrades) and were by then alot cheaper.

id say keep green items but only make them max and have a unique skin, let it still have mods be put on it. have them be a part of the special event system they are putting in.

Greens were originally implemented to give the not so rich players a chance to get a max weapon, with perfect mods, and generally nice stats. I don't see why people would have a grudge against them.

I loved greens and green farming. I don't think they did any harm to the economy and grudging people these perfectly modded, nice skinned weapons is somewhat selfish.

Its like those who detest inscriptions because it makes it easier for others to have the same skins with the same stats for less gold - its that elitist attitude that we hate. Lots of people ragequitted Guild Wars at Nightfall's release because of inscriptions which is their problem and their problem only.

@ The OP, I'm not suggesting that you're elitist or arrogant in anyway and I understand where you're coming from but I think that if this thread was turned in to a poll, we'd notice that more people are for greenies than against. (Prove me wrong! )

The development team had a great idea with greens (and inscriptions) because it pleased the majority.

A lot of power-traders are just annoyed that they can't sell as many items for 100k + 100 ectos+ (or "100+100" in their words - pisses me off big-tme). But, more people can use their PvE characters in PvP because its easier and cheaper to do so thanks to greens.

Greens anoy me. Fine if you want green give them some unbelivebly ugly skins or something like that so they dont look like one of the rare weapons!

I remember the time before greens, back when i was griffon farming.... i Spent 250k putting a reg 9 15^50 20% longer ench and 10/10 AP axe....i think it was a war axe....then a few days later SF came out and RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOed me over....little alone the introduction of Factions where every monster and their mother dropped a weapon with perfect mods!

Back in the day i used a reg 11 WHITE fellblade untill late maguma jungle i belive! and I was perfectly happy cos when i got that new GOLD weapon which was very rare! (before chest keys intro) i felt so good! that little extra umpf! i paid 30k for a reg 12 13^50 gol gladius....and that wasnt expensive enough for weapons back then! now i can go buy a perfect axe or sword for 2k.... ridiculous!

Not every one has that kind of money, why should people who dont want to spend hours upon hours farming and whom simply want to play through the game have to resort to not being able to have max weapons (which are more needed in the harder areas) or weapons with decent mods. And you can still get those super expensive skins that greens havnt touched on eg. Chaos Axe, Eternal Shield etc. etc.

Greens are just essentially the simpler way to get a max stat weapon which is great especially when you have more than one character.
